ITALIAN GP: ANTONELLI MAKES HISTORY AT MONZA

Kimi Antonelli made Formula 1 history with a performance destined to be remembered for years to come, winning the 2026 Italian Grand Prix from 19th on the grid. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver from Bologna gained 18 positions at Monza after being forced to start from the penultimate row due to a grid penalty for using his fifth power unit of the season. Sixty years after Ludovico Scarfiotti's Ferrari victory in 1966, an Italian driver has finally won again at the Temple of Speed.

Antonelli's charge also represents the second-biggest comeback by a race winner in Formula 1 history, behind only John Watson's remarkable victory from 22nd on the grid at Long Beach in 1983. But the foundations for this result had been laid well before Sunday. Knowing he would serve a grid penalty, Antonelli spent practice focusing heavily on a race-oriented setup, turning what appeared to be a major disadvantage into an opportunity.

The first major turning point came almost immediately. Charles Leclerc's crash at the Alboreto corner, following an opening phase that also featured a close battle with Lewis Hamilton, brought out the red flag and forced a second start. When racing resumed, Antonelli found himself on the edge of the top 10 and began a remarkable charge through the field, running an alternative strategy on medium tires while race leader George Russell and the McLarens opted for hards.

The pace of the No. 12 Mercedes quickly became clear. Pass after pass, Antonelli climbed through the field until he joined the battle for victory against Russell and Max Verstappen. The strategic breakthrough came on Lap 28, when a Virtual Safety Car was called to recover Lance Stroll's stranded Aston Martin at the first chicane.

Antonelli and Verstappen took advantage of the neutralization to switch to fresh tires while cutting their pit-loss time roughly in half, setting up a thrilling pursuit over the closing laps. Kimi's first attempt on Russell came up short and included a brief trip off track, but the Italian refused to back down.

With four laps remaining, the decisive moment finally arrived: Antonelli completed the pass on Russell and took the lead in front of the Monza crowd, holding his position to the checkered flag and completing one of the most spectacular victories of recent Formula 1 seasons.

Russell was forced to settle for a costly second place in terms of the championship, dropping 66 points behind his young teammate. Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull, ahead of the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Ferrari, meanwhile, leaves its home Grand Prix with an extremely disappointing result. Lewis Hamilton finished only sixth, compromised by his opening-lap contact with Leclerc and a strategy that prevented the SF-26 from maximizing its potential, while the Monegasque driver's retirement completed a disastrous Sunday for Maranello and pushed its championship hopes even further out of reach.
