Here are some of the most successful returns in the history of motorsport — those moments when legendary drivers or fan favorites came back after a break, a serious injury, or even retirement, to write unforgettable chapters in racing history. Every comeback is a story of resilience, passion, and, above all, triumph against the odds.

Niki Lauda – The comeback after retirement and a championship victory

When it comes to iconic comebacks in motorsport, Niki Lauda’s return stands as a true benchmark. After retiring from Formula 1 at the end of 1979 to focus on his business ventures, Lauda was drawn back to the sport and rejoined McLaren in 1982. He didn’t just return — in 1984, he won his third World Championship by the smallest margin in history, half a point, proving that competitiveness and talent don’t fade after the first phase of a career.

This wasn’t just a comeback — it was a return to the very top. Winning a world title after retirement is the kind of achievement that defines a legend.

Marc Márquez – From long-term injuries to a MotoGP title

Marc Márquez represents one of the most remarkable cases in recent years. After dominating MotoGP for a long stretch, a series of severe injuries kept him away from racing for entire seasons, even casting doubt on the future of his career. Yet his determination led him to a complete reset, a team change, and ultimately to winning the 2025 World Championship — a clear sign that #93 completed one of the greatest comebacks in recent two-wheel racing history.

Robert Kubica – From tragedy to victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Robert Kubica is not just a highly talented driver — his story is a unique example of resilience. After a horrific crash in 2011 that threatened to end his career and severely compromised the use of his right arm, many believed his competitive journey was over. Kubica returned to Formula 1 in 2019 with Williams, but his most extraordinary achievement came with his victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2025 with Ferrari — a triumph that stands as a true celebration of human and sporting perseverance. Winning the most prestigious endurance race in the world after years of hardship and uncertainty.

Fernando Alonso – From retirement to podiums and renewed competitiveness in F1

Fernando Alonso is one of the most beloved and charismatic drivers in Formula 1. After his temporary retirement from the sport in 2018, he returned to racing with Alpine in 2021, delivering strong performances and climbing back among the frontrunners despite the car’s limitations. His comeback continues to this day, enriched by experience gained in other racing categories, proving that a true champion never really leaves the big stage.

His ability to remain competitive in a constantly evolving environment, even after more than a decade at the top level, is a testament to his greatness.

Michael Schumacher – The return with Mercedes

Michael Schumacher did not win titles during his return to Formula 1, but his comeback after retiring in 2006 was one of the most significant events in the sport’s recent history. Returning in 2010 with the newly formed Mercedes team, he displayed professionalism and determination even under challenging circumstances. While the results didn’t match his dominant era, his presence helped lay the foundation for the team’s future success — both for its symbolic importance and for its impact on what would later become the dominant force of the hybrid F1 era.
