Marcus Ericsson returned to Victory Lane in the NTT IndyCar Series after a spectacular comeback in the inaugural Markham Grand Prix. The Andretti Global driver made the difference in the closing stages of the new Canadian event, capitalizing on a strategic call that allowed him to charge back through the field and attack each of his main rivals.

The decisive move came when Ericsson switched to a fresh set of soft tires. With fresh rubber, Ericsson completely transformed his pace and quickly rejoined the battle for victory, passing Alex Palou, Will Power, and eventually Romain Grosjean.

The winning move came with five laps remaining. Ericsson wrestled the lead away from Grosjean and never gave his rivals another opportunity, immediately building enough of a gap to control the final miles of the race. It marked the Swede's fifth career NTT IndyCar Series victory and, more importantly, his first win since the 2023 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Grosjean ultimately settled for second place, while Will Power and Alex Palou completed the top four. For Palou, the result carries significant weight in the championship battle, especially after direct rival Kyle Kirkwood crashed into the barriers and was forced to retire.

The brand-new permanent circuit in Markham proved extremely demanding from its very first weekend. The facility was only completed on Friday, forcing organizers to adjust the event schedule, with the opening practice session taking place on Saturday before FP2 and qualifying.

Mick Schumacher, Josef Newgarden, and Nolan Siegel were also among the retirements, while Louis Foster suffered one of the biggest disappointments of the race. The Rahal driver started from pole and showed impressive pace during the opening stints, only to throw away a potential breakthrough result by crashing into the wall at pit exit during the first half of the race.

Pato O'Ward brought the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet home in fifth, ahead of teammate Christian Lundgaard, Rinus VeeKay, and Scott McLaughlin.

With the inaugural Markham race now complete, IndyCar turns its attention to another unprecedented and highly symbolic event. The championship heads to Washington, D.C. next week for a special race celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
