INDYCAR UNVEILS FIRST RENDERS OF THE 2028 IR-28

IndyCar has unveiled the first technical details of its next-generation race car, set to debut in 2028. The new platform represents a major evolution of the current chassis, aiming to improve performance, efficiency, and on-track competition while preserving the core identity of the series.
Among the biggest changes is a weight reduction of approximately 45 kilograms, made possible in part by an all-new hybrid system. The updated unit will be lighter, more compact, and significantly more powerful than the one currently in use.
The electrical package will also receive a substantial upgrade. The new Energy Storage System will deliver fourteen times the capacity of the current unit, dramatically increasing the hybrid system's contribution during races. Engine regulations, however, remain unchanged, with Honda and Chevrolet continuing as the series' exclusive suppliers of 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engines producing approximately 760 horsepower.
Aerodynamics have also been redesigned with a clear objective. The new car will provide greater front-end stability on oval tracks, addressing one of the main priorities identified by drivers and teams to improve both racing quality and high-speed confidence.
Another key innovation is the introduction of the Custom AXIS Inertance Control Suspension System, a new suspension platform designed to retain a wide range of mechanical setup options while helping reduce overall operating costs for competitors.
One cornerstone of the series remains unchanged: Dallara will continue as the sole chassis supplier for the NTT IndyCar Series, reinforcing the Italian manufacturer's long-standing role at the heart of the championship.
While the future is beginning to take shape, the focus now returns to the current season. Following an action-packed weekend in Nashville, the IndyCar Series heads to Portland next week, where the decisive stretch of the championship will begin.
