SMALLEST MARGIN OF VICTORY IN INDY 500 HISTORY: ROSENQVIST WINS

Felix Rosenqvist delivered one of the most intense and dramatic finishes in modern Indianapolis 500 history, claiming victory in a final dash decided by mere thousandths of a second. The Swedish driver, at the wheel of the No. 60 Honda for Meyer Shank Racing, edged the No. 12 Chevrolet of David Malukas by just 23 thousandths of a second, in what stands as one of the closest finishes ever recorded in the Indianapolis 500.
For Rosenqvist, it marks his second career win in the IndyCar Series, but more importantly, a defining breakthrough earned through strategy, chaos, and precision execution all the way to the final lap.
The race had already begun with an early shock: Katherine Legge was eliminated after a heavy incident while attempting to avoid Ryan Hunter-Reay, who had spun and come to a stop on track. A dramatic opening moment that immediately set the tone for a highly volatile edition.
After the initial cautions, the race evolved into a long sequence of lead battles. Pole-sitter Alex Palou and Connor Daly lit up the mid-stages, repeatedly exchanging the lead, while Scott Dixon joined the fight, creating a constant strategic triangle between Chip Ganassi Racing and their rivals.
The halfway mark proved decisive: between cautions, a brief rain interruption, and technical issues, the rhythm of the race shifted repeatedly until David Malukas emerged as a genuine contender at the front, applying pressure to Palou and the field.
Then came the turning point: a caution triggered by Josef Newgarden’s crash fractured the race and opened the strategic window. Several teams opted for an early pit stop, including Pato O’Ward and Rosenqvist himself—a decision that would ultimately prove decisive. The under-caution strategy completely reshuffled the competitive order.
When racing resumed, the lead group found itself out of sync with pit cycles, allowing Rosenqvist to cycle into a favorable position ahead of O’Ward. From that point on, the race compressed toward an increasingly tense and unstable finish.
In the closing stages, everything pointed toward a direct duel between Rosenqvist and O’Ward, but another caution with eight laps remaining, caused by Caio Collet’s heavy crash, once again reshaped the outcome. The race turned into a fragmented sprint to the finish, marked by repeated restarts and rising tension.
Chaos escalated further when Marcus Armstrong briefly entered the fight, while another late interruption caused by Mick Schumacher further reduced green-flag running. The Indy 500 ultimately became a single, uninterrupted final-lap sprint with no stable rhythm.
The final lap unfolded as a multi-layered battle: Malukas leading, Armstrong applying pressure, and Rosenqvist charging from behind. The Swede executed his climb by perfectly using the outside line, steadily advancing through the field to reach the leader’s slipstream entering the final sequence of corners.
In the closing meters, Rosenqvist completed the decisive move just before the checkered flag, overtaking Malukas in a drag race to the line and securing victory by a historic margin. The closest finish in Indianapolis 500 history belonged to Rosenqvist.
Behind him, Scott McLaughlin, O’Ward, Armstrong, Rinus VeeKay, Alex Palou, and Santino Ferrucci completed a result entirely shaped by cautions and strategy calls.
A fitting reminder of the unpredictable nature of the Indianapolis 500: a race that is never just about speed, but about surviving chaos long enough to strike at the perfect moment.
