THE SIMULATOR DOESN'T REPLACE THE TRACK AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHY IT'S ESSENTIAL

One of the topics that repeatedly resurfaces in modern motorsport is the usefulness of simulators. Some people still dismiss them as nothing more than sophisticated video games, arguing that nothing can replace real on-track testing. And to some extent, that's a difficult statement to disagree with: nothing truly replaces the race track. The point, however, is that no one within the industry has ever claimed otherwise.
The reality is quite different. Private testing is more restricted than ever, regulations severely limit mileage, testing days, and development opportunities, while the amount of track time available during a race weekend has been reduced to the bare minimum. In this environment, the simulator was never designed to perfectly replicate the race track—it exists to provide the best possible alternative.
And that is precisely what many people still fail to understand.
Recently, Lewis Hamilton sparked discussion by revealing that he relies on the simulator far less than many other drivers when preparing for race weekends. That is a perfectly legitimate choice, reflecting his personal working method and the way he prefers to build confidence with the car. But it would be a mistake to interpret this personal preference as evidence that simulation itself is somehow ineffective.
Every driver is free to decide how much they want to integrate simulator work into their race weekend preparation, but the role of virtual simulation extends far beyond the hours spent by the driver behind the wheel in the driver-in-the-loop system. Above all, the simulator is an engineering and development tool. It is used to design the car, validate mathematical models, compare thousands of different setups, generate new data from information collected on track, and verify correlations that would otherwise require weeks of testing—and timeframes that simply no longer exist under today's regulations.
Reducing all of this to "Hamilton started using the simulator less and his on-track performances improved, therefore simulators are useless" means focusing only on the very last link in an enormously more complex technical chain.
If simulators were truly useless, Formula 1 teams would never invest tens of millions of dollars in dedicated facilities, proprietary software, and highly specialized personnel. No team would base setup decisions, aerodynamic correlation, development strategies, or component validation—at the pace required by modern motorsport—on tools incapable of producing reliable data.
The very fact that testing is so heavily restricted explains why simulators have become so important—not why they are ineffective. In fact, the opposite is true: the less time teams have on track, the more valuable every piece of information generated in the virtual world becomes.
Naturally, simulators have their limitations. Physical sensations are not identical, tire grip evolves differently, and some real-world variables still cannot be reproduced with absolute accuracy. But that is hardly a groundbreaking discovery; it is simply the reason why Formula 1 still has on-track testing and three hours of free practice during every Grand Prix weekend.
Expecting a simulator to reproduce 100% of reality before considering it useful means applying a standard that no motorsport professional would ever use. In engineering, the objective is to use the tool that provides the best balance between accuracy, cost, time, and development potential.
Put simply, it means using the best technology currently available.
And the results are there for everyone to see. More and more upgrades arrive at the track having already been digitally validated, the correlation between CFD, simulator work, and track data has become one of the foundations of modern car development, while drivers spend hundreds of hours in the simulator preparing circuits and procedures that they later encounter almost identically once they lower the visor.
The simulator did not become important because Formula 1 suddenly forgot how to drive a real race car. It became indispensable because today's regulations have made every kilometer on track incredibly valuable. In this environment, arriving on Friday with weeks of development work already completed in the virtual world represents an enormous competitive advantage.
Those who continue to see the simulator as little more than a video game are probably still confusing the tool with its purpose. Simulation does not exist to replace reality—it exists to get close enough to reality to enable better engineering decisions.
And considering how expensive mistakes have become in modern Formula 1, it is obvious that the value of the data produced by simulators is far greater than many outside the paddock still choose to believe.
