The third round of the 2026 IndyCar Series season delivered intense action and drama all the way to the final lap. Kyle Kirkwood overtook Alex Palou in the closing stages to claim a hard-fought victory in the inaugural Arlington Grand Prix, securing the sixth win of his IndyCar career and emerging as the strongest driver in the decisive phase of the Texas event.

The driver for Andretti Global rose to the top in the final portion of the race thanks to superior pace and flawless management of the closing stints. A victory built patiently throughout the race and sealed with a decisive late overtake.

The race initially belonged to Marcus Ericsson, who started from the first pole position of his IndyCar career and successfully defended the lead in the opening laps ahead of Palou and Australian veteran Will Power. The Swedish driver maintained control of the field early on, managing the pace with confidence and precision.

The first key turning point arrived on lap 17 during the opening round of pit stops. A tire-related issue slowed Ericsson and opened the door for Palou to take the lead through strategy, putting the Chip Ganassi Racing driver at the front of the race.

During the first half of the event, the Spanish driver managed the pace while keeping Ericsson behind him, while Power attempted an alternative strategy by extending his stint in an effort to complete one fewer pit stop than his rivals. Further back, Scott Dixon tried to shake up the race by using the softer tire compound early, completing both mandatory stints on that compound within the first twenty laps.

With no caution periods in the middle stages of the race, strategy became one of the decisive factors. Power managed to execute the one-stop-less approach, returning to pit road with roughly 25 laps remaining before attempting to close the gap to the leader.

Meanwhile, Kirkwood had begun his charge, overtaking Ericsson in the middle phase of the race and setting his sights on Palou’s No. 10 machine. The American driver steadily reduced the gap, positioning himself for a final attack.

The last round of pit stops, completed under green flag conditions, left Palou and Kirkwood virtually running first and second, with a small cushion over Power.

What followed was a thrilling finish. Kirkwood launched the decisive move in the final corner, pulling off a spectacular pass on Palou to take the lead, while the Spaniard was unable to defend against the late charge from the Florida native.

A late caution triggered by an incident involving Christian Rasmussen did not alter the outcome. The race ultimately ended under yellow after another contact on the final lap between Romain Grosjean and Nolan Siegel.

The victory moves Kirkwood to the top of the championship standings, marking his sixth career win and reinforcing his reputation as one of the most effective drivers on street and temporary circuits.

Behind him, Palou finished second ahead of Power, Ericsson, and the McLaren of Pato O'Ward. Andretti placed three cars inside the top five, showcasing impressive competitiveness against powerhouse teams such as Chip Ganassi Racing and McLaren.

After three consecutive races, the championship will now take a short break. The IndyCar Series will return to action at the end of the month at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama for the next round of the 2026 season.
