George Russell opened the 2026 Formula 1 season in the best possible way by winning the Australian Grand Prix. The British driver completed a perfect weekend in Melbourne, converting pole position into a commanding victory that marks the sixth win of his career. A result that immediately strengthens his candidacy for the world title and places him among the early protagonists of the season.
The opening phase of the race, however, was far from straightforward. Russell had to fend off an aggressive challenge from Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari after the start, losing some ground off the line and quickly finding himself locked in an intense duel with the Monegasque driver. For several laps the SF-26 remained glued to the Mercedes, preventing the race leader from building a meaningful gap.
The decisive moment of the Grand Prix came after thirteen laps. Mercedes perfectly capitalized on a Virtual Safety Car, triggered by the retirement of Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull due to reliability issues, executing a perfectly timed double pit stop. Russell and Kimi Antonelli switched to hard tires, while Ferrari’s pit wall chose to keep both of its cars out on track.
That decision proved to be crucial. When Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton completed their mandatory pit stops under green-flag conditions, both Mercedes cars jumped ahead of the Ferraris, effectively ending the battle for victory. The Brackley-based team thus secured a solid one-two finish, a result they had not achieved since the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Alongside Russell, Italian talent Kimi Antonelli also delivered an outstanding performance. The nineteen-year-old from Bologna produced an impressive comeback after a difficult start, at times even showing a pace superior to that of his teammate. It was a display of remarkable maturity that allowed him to claim a valuable second place in the opening race of the season.
Ferrari therefore had to settle for the final step of the podium with Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver begins Formula 1’s new era with a positive result, but also with the awareness that he could not fight Russell on equal terms, particularly from a strategic standpoint. There were encouraging signs from the other side of the garage as well, with Lewis Hamilton delivering a solid race to finish fourth, though he will have to wait longer for his first podium with the Scuderia from Maranello.
Behind the top four, the gap was significant. Reigning world champion Lando Norris finished fifth with McLaren, more than fifty seconds behind the leader, ahead of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull. The Dutchman produced a strong recovery drive after starting from the back of the grid.
The Australian race was also marked by several retirements, including that of local hero Oscar Piastri. The Australian driver was forced out before the start after an incredible incident during the formation lap.
Completing the points-paying positions were Oliver Bearman with Haas, rookie Arvid Lindblad for Racing Bulls, Gabriel Bortoleto with Audi, and Pierre Gasly for Alpine. A Grand Prix full of twists that has already set the stage for an exciting and unpredictable Formula 1 season.
