Josef Newgarden once again asserts his authority in the NTT IndyCar Series, doing so in the most classic way for an oval specialist: without hesitation, without compromise, and with surgical precision in the decisive moments. After the disappointment at Indianapolis, marked by a mistake in Turn 4 during the second half of the race, the American driver immediately responds with a commanding victory at Gateway, securing his second win of the season.
Newgarden once again confirms his extraordinary affinity with oval racing, and the numbers speak for themselves without the need for interpretation: at St. Louis, he claims his sixth victory in 11 starts at this track, a statistical dominance that better than any words captures his comfort on the circuit. The Team Penske driver, already a winner earlier this year at the Phoenix oval, delivers another composed and controlled performance, ultimately finishing ahead of Marcus Ericsson and Christian Rasmussen.
The race also highlighted the steady rise of Rinus VeeKay and Scott McLaughlin, both delivering clean and competitive drives, alongside Kyle Kirkwood, who remained in the leading group through the final stages. Behind them, however, the most important signal comes from the championship standings, where Newgarden continues to claw back valuable points.
Alex Palou, despite securing pole position, was unable to convert his front-row start into a meaningful result. A compromised pit stop after lap 200 ultimately ruined his race, dropping him to 17th at the finish. A costly setback, especially given the pace he had shown in the early stints.
Despite the misstep, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver from Spain still maintains control of the championship standings, but the gap is narrowing and the season is clearly entering a more intense and unpredictable phase. The title fight remains in his hands, but the pressure from the chasing pack is becoming both real and relentless.
