INDYCAR: ROAD AMERICA CHAOS, LUNDGAARD WINS

Christian Lundgaard ended the expected dominance of Alex Palou and captured a major victory in the NTT IndyCar Series after a dramatic and unpredictable race at Road America. The Arrow McLaren driver secured the win through patience, strategic execution, and composure under pressure, in a race that completely reshaped the script everyone expected.

At first, the day appeared destined to become another solo performance from Alex Palou. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver, starting from pole position and entering the event as the overwhelming favorite, controlled the pace from the opening laps and looked firmly in command.

But in IndyCar, it only takes one moment for everything to change. The first turning point arrived shortly after the opening round of pit stops, when a Safety Car caused by issues on Romain Grosjean’s car completely disrupted the strategic order. At that point, the lead shifted into the hands of Felix Rosenqvist and Meyer Shank Racing, suddenly opening the door to a completely different race.

The moment that truly changed everything came on Lap 29. Trying to undercut the competition and maintain control, Palou headed to pit lane ahead of his rivals. The move immediately backfired: a speeding penalty in pit lane erased in seconds the advantage he had built throughout the opening phase of the race. From dominant leader, the reigning champion suddenly became the hunter.

Meyer Shank Racing, however, was unable to fully capitalize on the opportunity.

Rosenqvist attempted to make his stop just as pit lane was closed following Christian Rasmussen’s stoppage on the main straight. Another unexpected twist that reshuffled the field and ignited the middle portion of the race.

With more than twenty laps remaining, the event turned into a full-scale battle of recovery and execution.

Marcus Armstrong inherited the lead ahead of David Malukas and Alexander Rossi, controlling the pace while waiting for the final pit window. Even after the last sequence of stops, the New Zealander appeared to have the biggest opportunity of his IndyCar career in his hands.

Behind him, however, a growing threat was emerging. Christian Lundgaard began closing the gap lap after lap, applying relentless pressure and positioning himself perfectly for the decisive moment of the race. Graham Rahal remained within striking distance as well.

Then, with only three laps to go, the final twist arrived. Armstrong suddenly suffered a loss of power and was forced to stop trackside. Race control had no choice but to deploy the Safety Car and bunch up the field for one final sprint.

The scenario inevitably brought back memories of the Indy 500 finish.

When the race restarted for the final green-flag lap, Lundgaard left no room for debate. The Dane executed a flawless restart, immediately neutralizing Malukas’ challenge and taking advantage of an Arrow McLaren machine that was simply stronger out of the Restart Zone.

Behind the winner, another race unfolded. Will Power initially secured a podium finish after making contact with Graham Rahal at Canada Corner, an incident that sent the RLL driver into the barriers. Completing the leading positions were Kyffin Simpson, Alex Palou — who still managed an impressive recovery despite the penalty — Alexander Rossi, Scott McLaughlin, and Felix Rosenqvist.

Road America ultimately delivered one of the most unpredictable races of the season: an event that looked written from the start and instead was rewritten corner after corner.

The NTT IndyCar Series will now take a one-week break before returning in early July for the traditional stop at Mid-Ohio.
