AUSTRIAN GP: RUSSELL MAKES NO MISTAKES

George Russell dominates Spielberg and completes a personal double in the 2026 championship, converting pole position into a controlled and calculated victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, round eight of the Formula One season.

For the Mercedes driver, this marks his second win of the year after opening the season with victory in Melbourne and the seventh triumph of his Formula One career, a result that reshapes the title fight and firmly puts him back among the championship contenders.

At the Red Bull Ring, he may not have been the outright fastest driver, but Russell delivered what separates winning weekends from merely competitive ones: being flawless when it mattered most. First with the controversial final lap in Q3, then with an exceptionally clean opening lap that allowed him to defend the lead from Charles Leclerc’s early attacks.

From that point on, the Briton managed the race intelligently, controlling the pace while resisting the late charge from Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and the second Mercedes driven by Kimi Antonelli.

Behind him, Verstappen and Antonelli completed the podium after a battle that remained alive until the closing stages. The Italian came within just a few tenths of second place, partially recovering from a disappointing qualifying session and collecting valuable championship points. His advantage in the standings remains significant: 40 points over Russell and 46 over Hamilton.

Further back were the remaining frontrunners, unable to match the pace of the three drivers who truly fought for victory. Fourth place went to a resurgent Oscar Piastri in the McLaren, ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari, whose race was also compromised by a strategy call that may have cost him a shot at the top four.

Another extremely difficult Sunday, meanwhile, for Charles Leclerc. Starting from the front row, the Monegasque gradually dropped back and eventually fell to eighth place. A race defined by constant struggle, insufficient pace, and battles that almost always ended against him, leaving Ferrari with more questions than answers.
