RACE FOR GLORY: A HUMBLE AND SINCERE TALE OF THE GOLDEN YEARS OF RALLY

The 1983 World Rally Championship is etched in memory for the extraordinary showdown between Audi and Lancia. On one side, there was the advanced technology of the Audi team led by Roland Gumpert, featuring all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; on the other, the mechanical tradition of Cesare Fiorio's Lancia team, with rear-wheel drive and two-wheel drive. This duel captivated not only motorsport enthusiasts but also those unfamiliar with the sport. It's precisely this epic rivalry that director Stefano Mordini decided to bring to the big screen with "Race for Glory – Audi vs. Lancia".

The film focuses on the year that made history, when Cesare Fiorio's Lancia team, portrayed by Riccardo Scamarcio, faced off against the dominant German automotive giant led by Roland Gumpert, played by Daniel Bruhl. Despite seeming like an uneven battle, Fiorio demonstrated heart, passion, and an indomitable will to never surrender. With cunning, strategy, and ingenuity, he assembled an unconventional team, even convincing champion Walter Röhrl, portrayed by Volker Bruch, to drive for Lancia. The relationship between the two, however, proved complex, mirroring the challenge Mordini faced in transforming this story into a great film.

The rivalry between Audi and Lancia stands as one of the greatest in sports history, marked by the epic feat of the iconic rear-wheel-drive Lancia Rally 037, which ushered in a golden era for the Italian automotive manufacturer. The Lancia brand continues to reign supreme in the world of rallying, thanks to that monumental victory in 1983.

Rallying is a sport not easily explained or depicted, not just due to its technical challenges but especially because of the emotions and adrenaline it evokes. Mordini and Scamarcio, who not only starred in but also produced the film, were aware of this challenge from the outset. "Race for Glory," loosely inspired by real events, is more than just a sports narrative. It's the story of individuals like Cesare Fiorio, who led the Lancia team with passion and determination, bringing Italian ingenuity to victory over formidable German technology.

The film offers a humble, sincere, and gripping glimpse into a complex universe, avoiding the trappings of Hollywood clichés. The race sequences convey the tension, unpredictability, and strategies employed, showcasing the hard work of a team determined to achieve success. "Race for Glory" brings to the screen a lesser-known aspect of Italy while maintaining an authentic and true tone that characterizes our country, reminding viewers of a period of victories and pride that we hope will return.
