BRIEFING F1: SÃO PAULO GP

The Brazilian Grand Prix marks the final round of the American trilogy and kicks off the closing month of the Formula 1 season. This race could be pivotal in determining the outcomes of both the drivers' and constructors' championships.

On the renowned Interlagos circuit, drivers will tackle the sprint race format followed by the Sunday Grand Prix, with many points at stake and limited time to fine-tune their cars. The track offers numerous opportunities for close battles, making every decision critical.

Ferrari appears to be in a strong position following victories in Austin and Mexico City, aiming to extend their winning streak. However, McLaren could be a significant contender on this track. Ferrari's confidence and the consistency of their drivers could prove to be crucial advantages.

While pre-race simulations have shown promising results, uncertainties remain regarding the new asphalt and the lower temperatures expected over the weekend. Given the historically tight qualifying sessions, it will be essential to seize the right moment for a fast lap and prepare the car effectively for the sprint race.

McLaren arrives at Interlagos as the favorite, thanks to the speed they displayed in the latter stages of the Mexican Grand Prix. However, despite their strong overall performance, the team risks losing both the drivers' and constructors' titles. Norris seems to lack consistency in crucial moments, and Piastri's dip in form could weigh heavily on the team's ambitions. This could benefit Verstappen and Red Bull, who are solidifying their lead despite facing some challenges midway through the season.

Mercedes, as stated by team principal Toto Wolff, is already looking ahead to 2025 and sees it as challenging to compete for victory against Ferrari and McLaren. Among the underdogs, Haas appears revitalized after Steiner's departure, while Aston Martin, Williams, and Racing Bulls will struggle to score points. Sauber, awaiting its transformation into Audi, seems to be in decline.

Pirelli will bring softer compounds compared to 2024, which could complicate qualifying for Ferrari, given their difficulties in warming up the tires. However, they might benefit during the race due to improved tire degradation management with recent updates. The impact of the new asphalt and cooler temperatures on tire performance will be key to watch.

Qualifying will be crucial, as demonstrated by Verstappen's recent performances. If he falters in qualifying, the weekend could become particularly challenging, compounded by a potential penalty for a power unit change, which would result in a five-place grid drop. For Verstappen, the drivers' title is still very much up for grabs.
